Right. This bit was supposed to go on the end of my ?What is Palgwe? thingy.
Taegeuk Gwe Meaning
Il-jang Keon Heaven and sky - the beginning of the universe.
Yi-jang Tae Light ? outer softness and inner firmness.
Sam-jang Ri Fire/the sun ? hot and bright
Sa-jang Jin Thunder ? great power
O-jang Seon Wind ? mighty force/calmness
Yuk-jang Gam Water ? incessant flow, softness and fidelity.
Chil-jang Gan Mountains and hills ? ponderous, solemn majesty and firmness.
Pal-jang Gon The Earth ? the root and settlement, the last of the Taegeuk Poomsae.

Those who practice Tae Kwon Do must learn the idealisms of Taegeuk: pacifism, unity, creative spirit, future spirit and eternity.
The universe is vaster than we imagine, and the creation and wonders of nature are mysterious.
The Chinese philosophy book: ?The Book Of Change?, explains the Eight Gwe and the appearance of nature and the world. The eight Gwe (Palgwe) originate from Taegeuk, and Taegeuk is the root of all creation. Male and female were created from Taegeuk, four Gwe were created from the male and female as such the other Gwe were created from other direct creation of Taegeuk.
The Cosmos had no colour or form, and had no beginning or end prior to the world being produced. After the world was produced, male was produced from its energies, and then female was produced. The belief is that the spiritual energy of the male was fire. Female was produced by the maximum of all the emotions, and the spiritual energy was water. The male in essence is the spirit of all that of the Sun and sky, while the female is the spirit of the Moon and the Earth. It is believed that male and female are derived from Taegeuk.
The eight Gwe are: Keon, Tae, Ri, Jin, Seon, Gam, Gan and Gon. The eight Gwe represent the Heaven and sky, water (marsh or lake), fire; the Sun, light, thunder, wind; wood, water (springs, streams), mountains and hills, and the Earth. The Palgwe also represent the eight cardinal and intercardinal directions (North, North ? East, East, South ? East, South, South ? West, West & North ? West). The elements of metal, water, wood, fire and earth are believed to be derived from the combination of the male and female spirits, and the elements realte to each other in the following theories of helping each other to be produced; fire from wood, wood from water, water from metal, metal from earth and earth from fire.
Another theory, which is the destructive theory, is as follows: fire melts metals, wood takes nourishment from thev earth, water extinguishes fire, metal cuts wood and the earth blocks water.
Taegeuk, in addition follows the law of nature called ?The Yin Yang Theory?; the negative and positive, and the male and female. Also included in the theories of Taegeuk are ?The Theories Of The Great Absolute? and the ?Ohaeng Theory? (the five primary elements).
Palgwe Poomse follows the aforementioned theories, and this is integrated into the techniques of actions.

We now have a web link to our Swarm site from the Hampshire County Council web site. They have kindly included links to our site from both their Sports page, and from their Clubs and Societies page. Our site has also been included in their search engine, which means that potential new students searching the web for a Taekwondo club in Hampshire will have more chance of finding our site.
I'm also in the process of applying for the Swarm site to be included in the Hampshire County Council Community Information Directory.
Other news: Today I received a letter from Jung-Ho, who some may remember from last year. Jung-Ho is the 4th Dan Master that visited us from Korea, with Kathy. He has kindly sent me information regarding black belt training camps and other Taekwondo related trips to Korea that are happening throughout 2003. I've sent Jung-Ho an email, so I'll keep you all updated on the latest, and let you know if and when he is planning to visit us again.

In the words of Arnie 'I'll be back!'. I hope to return to training w/c 17th February, although my services will once again be required in Blackburn the following week. On a very important note the Coaches and Instructors of Swarm must pay special thanks to Paul Linsell for the inauguration of the clubs web site, you’ve done an excellent job. I have heard from Master Val Winteridge that the gradings were successful on Sunday 9th Feb, with only a couple of students that did not live up to either there own or the clubs expectations, so congratulations go out to all those who were successful. See you all soon, and for those male students that are pining for Clairey, ‘Yes’ I will bring her with me…

A number of people have been enquiring about Graham's recent disappearing act. Well I'm pleased to report that he is safe and well and will be returning to take the class within a few weeks. I managed to catch up with him last night on the phone.
Graham has not been abducted by aliens, nor has he gone on a 5-week drinking binge (well that's what he claims). He has simply been working away up North, and has left Val and myself in charge of the lessons until he returns.
On a similar note, you may have noticed the return of a long-standing Swarm member - Carlie. Who has recently beaten and recovered from Meningitis and is happy to start getting back into training again. We would like to congratulate Carlie on her recovery and wish her all the best health for the future.

?All work and no play can make Jack a dull boy? is an old saying that I believe has a lot more relevance in today?s high-tech world of computers and monstrous office blocks, than it every used to. It?s all too easy for someone to spend the whole day in an office, drive home and then slump down in the sofa for an evening of mind numbing TV. And it?s becoming even easier not to move from the TV, what with the birth of digital TV where you can do all your shopping on-line without even moving! But who am I to preach about all this, I hear you cry. Well as a programmer and employer I have first hand knowledge of why having an extra activity in your life, such as Taekwondo, is of the utmost importance. I usual spend 10 hours a day on my backside in front of computer tapping away at the keyboard. And I know for a fact that without the benefits of Taekwondo and other activities that I enjoy I would certainly be a dull boy?although some may argue that I?m still a dull boy! But, hey, they?ll be less inclined to point it out now that I?m a black belt!
And as an employer I also believe that the evidence of non-work and non-academic activities that are clear to see on a prospects CV is important when making a decision to employ that person or not. For example, if I had two candidates for the same job, both with equal skills and experience but one participated in a sporting activity and the other didn?t, then I know which one I?d be more inclined to employ. Taekwondo and other similar Martial Arts are even more impressive on a candidates CV, because it shows that the person is not only reasonably fit, but is a lot more likely to have extra confidence and sticking power than someone who does nothing?or maybe I?m just bias!
So kids, Taekwondo is not only a fun thing to do, but it also has a lot of hidden intangible benefits as well. It gets you away from that over used Play Station and helps to improve the well being of your mind and body. And as the club grows in size it will mean that the social side will grow too?so there?ll be even less excuse for being a dull boy.
